July Meeting Highlights

July 17, 2008

By Jack Bevis (Branch 116), CAT Secretary/Web Correspondent

"What is the Internet?  How does it work?  Who really invented it?" -- by Dick Curry.  Presentation Materials:  (pdf)  (ppt)

Computers & Technology Group Co-Chairman Phil Chairman Phil Goff called the meeting to order at 9:00am.  Executive Committee members attending were Dick Curry, Phil Goff, Floyd Skelton, Jack Bevis, Dick Chaffee, Ollie Greenlee, Lo McCarley, Vic Moore and Frank Crua. Total attendance was 52.

Phil opened the meeting by passing around a couple of new fun toys: a 160GB portable very small USB powered HD costing only $55, and a 4GB Flash Drive the size of a postage stamp.  The Flash Drive sells for $10 and is called the Gizmo Jr.   If you are interested, Phil said to checkout Slickdeals.net to find these fun things.

Phil reported that: At the August meeting Dean Steichen will give a presentation on Bluetooth and Phil will review the Firefox web browser.  Also the raffle for the old Club laptop will be held in August.

The Group agreed to allocate 15 minutes in some future meetings for items to accommodate new members.

Dick Curry chaired a Q&A session while a laptop/projector interface problem was being resolved.   Dick followed with his presentation on the Internet.  He started off with a fun approach of NERDS vs. the”Gates”.  Dick then reviewed the historical evolution of the Internet and outlined the current operational methodology of the Internet.  He gave examples of the operational protocol for accessing a website and accessing a file.  Dick’s full presentation is on the Computer Group’s website.

After his presentation Dick finished the Q&A session.
